At first glance, it looked like another routine delivery van moving in and out of Jerusalem. But a focused inspection by Border Police officers in the Jerusalem envelope exposed a far more calculated attempt – one that was hidden not behind doors, but above them.
The operation took place at the ring checkpoint surrounding Jerusalem, following intelligence guidance from the Border Police investigations and intelligence unit. The vehicle raised suspicion despite carrying branding of a well-known retail food company – a detail believed to have been used as deliberate cover. The suspect is not affiliated with the company.
How was the smuggling attempt carried out at the Jerusalem checkpoint?
During a thorough inspection, officers identified an unusual structure on the vehicle’s roof. A closer check revealed a specially built double layer designed to conceal people. Behind it, nine illegal entrants were found tightly hidden, attempting to infiltrate Israeli territory.
This method is known to security forces, yet continues to evolve in sophistication – posing risks both to those being smuggled and to the surrounding area.
What is illegal entry into Israel via Jerusalem checkpoints and how are Border Police stopping it?
The driver, a 22-year-old resident of East Jerusalem, was arrested at the scene and transferred for further questioning by the Border Police investigations and intelligence unit.
A Border Police spokesperson stated: “Border Police forces will continue to act decisively and with a range of advanced intelligence and operational tools to prevent illegal entry attempts and safeguard the public.”
In a tense security reality, with Jerusalem also facing external threats, efforts to stop such infiltration attempts remain a constant part of daily operations.
