Border Police officers from the Jerusalem Envelope unit arrested a 29-year-old suspect, a resident of the village of a-Ram, who was documented about two weeks ago smuggling a young child over the Separation Barrier in Jerusalem while she was tied with a rope, placing her life in real danger. The arrest was carried out in a-Ram, near Ramallah, following focused intelligence work and analysis of visual documentation that led to the suspect’s identification and location.
According to police, the footage shows the suspect lifting the child to the top of the wall, tying her with a rope and lowering her to the other side — an especially dangerous act that could have ended in serious injury or loss of life. After reviewing the materials, an investigation was opened and concluded with the suspect’s arrest.
During the operation, Border Police officers entered the village with aerial support from the “Rakia” unit, which specializes in operating drones and unmanned aerial systems. The suspect was located outside a business and arrested at the scene.
How Are Smuggling Attempts Over the Separation Barrier in Jerusalem Carried Out?
Police note that smuggling attempts over the Separation Barrier in Jerusalem are sometimes carried out using improvised and hazardous methods, including ropes or climbing the wall itself, posing a severe risk to human life. In this case, the combination of unusual footage and targeted intelligence activity enabled officers to arrest the suspect before a tragedy occurred.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of smuggling infiltrators through the Separation Barrier and abuse of a minor, and was transferred for further questioning by the Jerusalem Envelope Border Police investigations unit.
Police said: “Border Police officers from the Jerusalem Envelope unit continue to act with determination to thwart serious offenses and prevent situations that endanger human life, using operational and intelligence capabilities, in order to safeguard public security.”
