Air raid sirens that sounded across Jerusalem on Saturday afternoon quickly turned into a tense reality on the ground. In several locations across the city, interception debris was found after rockets were fired toward the capital.
In one of the main scenes in southern Jerusalem, fragments struck a residential building and caused damage to the roof and the building’s parking area. Pieces of metal and debris were scattered around the scene as security forces began isolating and scanning the area.
At the site, a munition item was found lodged between two nearby buildings, requiring careful handling by police bomb disposal experts. Because of the situation, authorities are examining the possibility of temporarily evacuating some residents from the affected building until the neutralization operation is completed.
Police bomb disposal units, Jerusalem District police officers, Border Police fighters, Home Front Command personnel and Jerusalem Municipality teams are operating at the scene and addressing the damage caused to buildings and infrastructure.
Will residents be evacuated from the damaged building in Jerusalem?
Officials at the Jerusalem Municipality are assessing the structural condition of the building and the potential risks posed by the munition item located between the nearby structures. Depending on the ongoing assessment, residents may be temporarily relocated to a nearby public facility until the police operation is completed.
Meanwhile, the Jerusalem District Police said: “Jerusalem District police officers, Border Police fighters and police bomb disposal experts are currently handling two main scenes where weapon items and interception debris fell within the district. As a result, damage was caused to property and infrastructure. We call on the public to follow instructions, avoid approaching sites where weapon items have fallen, keep traffic routes clear for emergency and rescue forces, avoid touching any items or interception debris, and allow police and emergency forces to carry out life-saving operations.”
At this stage, no injuries have been reported, though property damage has been recorded in several locations across the city. Security forces continue to operate at the scenes until the handling of the fallen items is completed.
