Will Jerusalem wake up to its first winter scent? As stones dry from long weeks of sun and the mountain winds gather above the city, residents are waiting for the moment when the pavements shine and the air changes. The coming weekend, between 14 and 16 November, is expected to bring scattered showers, lower temperatures and the unmistakable smell of the season returning.
Jerusalem weather forecast: rain, wind and shiny pavements
According to forecasters, the first drops may arrive on Friday morning, between 06:00 and 08:00, especially in the northern neighbourhoods and the city centre. Streets may become wet for the first time this season, and the air is expected to carry the sharp, cool scent of fresh rain.
Later in the day, between 11:00 and 14:00, short breaks in the clouds are likely, but winds could strengthen across open areas and transport the smell of wet stone towards Jaffa Street, Hebron Road and the light rail line.
Saturday is expected to be the wetter day. Light showers may fall between 02:00 and 05:00, and again between 09:00 and 13:00. Temperatures will range from 12°C to 17°C, with shiny stones and slippery roads possible in central areas of the city.
On Sunday, only isolated showers are expected, but the scent of wet pavements is likely to remain until the afternoon.
There is hope that the Jerusalem Municipality will increase preparation for drainage and traffic across major routes, and that the Gihon water corporation will ensure the systems work smoothly at the start of the season.
Across the city, anticipation is already in the air. As many in central Jerusalem describe it, “you know the smell – wet stone, shiny pavements, cooler air. When the streets are wet, Jerusalem is at its best”.
