A tense morning in Jerusalem: worshippers at the Western Wall were shocked to discover political graffiti sprayed on the ancient stones and the nearby Mughrabi Gate, two of the most sensitive religious sites in Israel. A 27-year-old local resident was arrested, and police say he also painted similar slogans on the Great Synagogue in the city center. Authorities vow to bring him to justice
Graffiti on the Western Wall Stones and Mughrabi Gate – a blow to Jerusalem’s holiest site
In the early hours, security guards at the holy sites noticed bright green lettering reading “There is a Holocaust in Gaza” sprayed directly on part of the Western Wall stones and on the wall near the Mughrabi Gate, leading directly to the prayer plaza. Witnesses said some worshippers froze in disbelief, while others broke into tears. Anger and frustration quickly spread among those present. Police officers from the David District arrived swiftly, detained the suspect, and took him for questioning
The Great Synagogue in Jerusalem targeted as well
Police later found that shortly before the Western Wall incident, the suspect had sprayed several similar slogans on the outer wall of the Great Synagogue, one of Jerusalem’s most prominent landmarks. Community figures described the act as a direct affront to the sanctity of the site and a disturbing incident for the city’s residents
Police: ‘We will see justice done
“This is a grave act that harms the public’s feelings and the sanctity of sites sacred to the Jewish people,” police said in a statement. “We will work to ensure the suspect faces the full force of the law.” The suspect, a Jerusalem resident in his 20s, exercised his right to remain silent during questioning and is expected to appear before a judge today
