During the night, a crash involving three vehicles occurred at the exit of Jerusalem’s Shazar Tunnel, right before the junction leading toward the Chords Bridge – a busy corridor where fast tunnel driving suddenly meets crowded urban traffic. Eight young people, aged 17–30, were lightly injured and treated on scene by United Hatzalah medics and ambulance teams.
After receiving initial treatment, all casualties were evacuated by United Hatzalah ambulances for further medical checks at the hospital. Traffic jams formed in the area, lanes were partially blocked, and inspectors directed drivers until the vehicles were removed.
Driving out of Shazar Tunnel in Jerusalem
The exit from Shazar Tunnel leads straight into a packed urban road where sudden braking, lane switching, and bright lighting can surprise drivers. Many report a “speed illusion” — the feeling of open road after the tunnel, until halted traffic appears without warning.
At night — especially after Shabbat — the risk increases. Fatigue, fast lane changes, and a high number of vehicles leaving the tunnel together can turn a small mistake into a multi-car collision.
A United Hatzalah volunteer who arrived first said: “We treated eight lightly injured people suffering from minor wounds. It could have ended much worse.”
Police have opened an investigation into the cause of the crash.
