How Is Life Being Missed in Jerusalem?

Most people in Jerusalem are stuck in traffic, heads down beneath clouds of dust from endless infrastructure works – and barely notice what they are missing

Jerusalem today feels permanently under construction. Road closures, heavy traffic, open excavations, and continuous light rail works shape daily life across the city. Dust lingers in the air, sidewalks feel temporary, and even short errands require time and patience. Daily routines have become mechanical: work, commute, repeat. In the process, many residents stop looking around. Not only time is lost, but also the ability to pause, breathe, and notice what still exists beyond the noise.

Why Is Jerusalem’s Rose Garden Almost Empty?

Hidden in plain sight near the Knesset and government buildings, Jerusalem’s Rose Garden, also known as the Wohl Rose Garden, continues to exist quietly. One of the city’s oldest public gardens, it has undergone recent renovation, including renewed walking paths, restored water features, and improved landscaping. On days like these, when the winter sun breaks through the clouds, the garden feels detached from the surrounding city – calm water, greenery, birds, and a kind of silence that has become rare in Jerusalem. It is not an attraction or a leisure destination, but a maintained urban space that remains there every day, while for many Jerusalemites, life itself simply passes by.
