Jerusalem is taking a significant urban step this week as the city reintroduces its pedestrian project on Agripas Street. Every Thursday evening and Friday, the street adjacent to Mahane Yehuda Market will transform into a car-free space, offering residents and visitors a safe and vibrant environment. This move places Jerusalem on the map of global cities that prioritize people over traffic

Pedestrian zones as a global urban trend

Around the world, major cities are creating pedestrian areas to improve safety, accessibility and quality of life. By expanding its car-free zones, Jerusalem joins this international trend. The initiative is not only about easing movement, but about giving back the streets to the public and highlighting Mahane Yehuda as a cultural landmark

Merchants highlight safety and accessibility

Chairwoman of the Mahane Yehuda Market Committee, Tali Friedman, emphasized: “Turning Agripas Street on weekends into a safe and accessible pedestrian space is undoubtedly good news for buyers and visitors coming to the market. With the light rail back in full operation and the expansion of the lines, there is no doubt that access to the market will be easier and more convenient, which will allow many to return and enjoy a safe shopping and leisure experience. This is an important and significant step that puts the safety of visitors and merchants at the top of the agenda and restores order and accessibility to the place
