Against the backdrop of the war with Iran, Jerusalem is waking up to a different reality. Quieter streets, shuttered schools and reduced public transportation have abruptly reshaped daily life in Israel’s capital. As Operation “Roaring Lion” unfolds and security tensions escalate, the city is operating under strict emergency measures aimed at maintaining public safety while preserving essential services.
The Jerusalem Municipality opened its municipal emergency command center upon receiving the first alert. Mayor Moshe Lion held situation assessments with Director General Ariela Regev and representatives of security, emergency and rescue forces. In accordance with Home Front Command directives, a series of restrictions altering daily life in the city will remain in effect until Monday at 8:00 p.m.
What restrictions are currently in place in Jerusalem?
All educational institutions, welfare services and youth movements are closed. Cultural and sporting events have been postponed due to the ban on public gatherings. Non-essential workplaces are shut, and municipal offices are closed to the public.
The Jerusalem Light Rail is not operating, while Israel Railways and bus companies are running on a limited schedule. Infrastructure works across the city continue under Home Front Command guidelines.
All approved municipal shelters, schools and designated public facilities are open for use if necessary. Emergency units within community administrations remain active throughout Jerusalem, and the municipal hotline 106 is available for residents.
The Jerusalem Municipality stated that “emergency, security and welfare teams are operating around the clock to assist residents across the city. We are prepared for every scenario and are working in full coordination with security authorities.”
What is the status of Purim events and the Adloyada parade in Jerusalem?
Regarding Purim celebrations and the annual Adloyada parade, a detailed announcement will be issued later. At this stage, due to the prohibition on gatherings, the events are not taking place.
Mayor Moshe Lion emphasizes: “The people of Israel are stronger than ever, and we are witnessing historic moments. However, in light of last night’s incident in Tel Aviv, we must continue to remain alert and disciplined and follow the Home Front Command’s instructions. They save lives.”
What support measures has the municipality introduced?
For the duration of the emergency period, the municipality has introduced several support measures to ensure continuity of services. Special childcare services are operating for the children of medical teams at Shaare Zedek, Hadassah Mount Scopus and Hadassah Ein Kerem hospitals, as well as for other essential workers, enabling them to continue their critical duties.
A Magen David Adom blood donation unit has been stationed at Safra Square parking level minus four, and residents are encouraged to donate blood to assist emergency response efforts.
“The responsibility of each and every one of us is to act with restraint and vigilance,” Lion emphasizes. “Following the guidelines means protecting human life.”
