Jerusalem Red Light – Against Violence Toward Women

The Chords Bridge in Jerusalem was lit in red to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Jerusalem illuminated the Chords Bridge in red this week as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The initiative forms part of the national “Red Lights” campaign led by WIZO Israel and the Federation of Local Authorities, highlighting early warning signs in young relationships, among teenagers, and in homes where children live under the threat of violence.

According to national data, around 30 women have been murdered this year in Israel due to domestic violence. Since the war began, welfare agencies report a sharp rise in calls and emergency alerts, including from families not previously known to social services. The municipality operates a dedicated domestic-violence hotline through City Call Center line 5, available 24 hours a day with an option for anonymous assistance.

How is Jerusalem strengthening awareness and prevention?

The city uses public campaigns, strong visual symbols, and accessible support services to identify danger early and protect those at risk.

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion said the red lighting is “a painful reminder and a commitment. We will continue protecting women and children, raising awareness, and ensuring no one faces violence alone.”
