Jerusalem is a city where holiday gatherings inside a synagogue are meant to create calm and closeness. But during Simchat Torah in the Ramot neighborhood, that sense of safety was broken. According to an indictment filed by the Jerusalem District Police Prosecution Unit, a local resident entered a synagogue with a knife and brass knuckles and assaulted worshippers.

The incident began during a holiday meal. Investigators say the defendant threw a wine bottle on the floor, cursed those present and refused to leave. He later returned twice, physically attacking worshippers and issuing threats.
The synagogue and the moment of fear
Witnesses described a sudden shift from celebration to tension. One worshipper attempted to escort the man outside and was attacked. Others watched as the suspect raised his hands toward a security camera, causing panic among those inside.
Police officers from Lev HaBira station arrived and arrested the suspect shortly thereafter. The investigation included statements from worshippers and security footage.
The indictment
The prosecution filed charges including assault, threats and unlawful possession of a knife. A request was also submitted to hold the defendant until the end of legal proceedings. Police stated they view violence in places of worship as serious and will continue acting to protect the public.
CCTV footage captured outside the synagogue shows the suspect’s movements shortly before the confrontation.
