The story began in recent days with a shipment arriving from the United States containing what appeared to be a decorative furniture item. During an inspection by investigators from the Central Customs Drug Unit and the Israel Tax Authority canine unit, suspicions arose that something else might be hidden inside the structure of the item.
After the discovery, the investigation was transferred to the Central Unit of the Jerusalem District – the YAMAR Jerusalem unit – which began investigative actions to identify those behind the shipment.
A closer examination of the item revealed that flat packages of hashish had been concealed inside. The substance had been embedded within the internal structure of the furniture piece so that, at first glance, it appeared to be an ordinary decorative household object.
How was a drug shipment hidden inside decorative furniture discovered?
At the customs inspection point the shipment drew suspicion and was examined more closely. Investigators then discovered that internal cavities inside the furniture contained packages of hashish weighing more than one kilogram.
Following the discovery, the investigation was transferred to the Jerusalem District Central Unit.
What did the YAMAR Jerusalem investigation reveal?
During the investigation two Jerusalem residents in their 30s were arrested. Additional substances were seized in the apartment where they were staying, including cocaine, MDMA, LSD and crystal meth.
The Jerusalem District Police said: “Following joint activity with the Central Customs Drug Unit of the Israel Tax Authority, a shipment from the United States was located containing drugs concealed inside a piece of decorative furniture. After the investigation was transferred to the Jerusalem District Central Unit, two suspects were arrested and an indictment was later filed against them along with a request to extend their detention until the end of proceedings.”
How did the shipment’s journey from the United States end?
The suspects’ detention was extended several times by the court, and at the end of last week an indictment was filed against them at the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court.
Thus ended the journey of a single shipment – one that began as decorative furniture sent from the United States and ended as part of an investigation by YAMAR Jerusalem.
