During the night, Israel Police officers from the Jerusalem District and Border Police forces operated in Jerusalem as thousands of people gathered in the city’s streets in violation of Home Front Command instructions. The events unfolded while Israel remains under the threat of missile fire as part of Operation “Lion’s Roar”, with authorities repeatedly urging the public to avoid large gatherings and follow safety guidelines.

Why are large gatherings in Jerusalem dangerous during rocket sirens?

According to police, officers repeatedly announced over loudspeakers that the gathering violated Home Front Command instructions and posed a real danger to those present as well as to security forces operating in the area. Despite the warnings, many revelers remained in the streets, some consuming large amounts of alcohol as fights broke out between groups of participants.

During the police activity, officers destroyed dozens of alcoholic beverages and worked to disperse the crowd. In one of the incidents, a 16-year-old minor from Jerusalem was moderately injured during a fight and was evacuated to hospital for medical treatment.

How did Jerusalem police respond to the crowds?

While police forces were attempting to disperse the gathering and enforce public order, sirens were heard across several areas of Israel following rocket launches toward the country. Despite the security situation, officers continued their activity on the ground in order to restore order and prevent further danger to the public.

Jerusalem District Police said: “During enforcement operations, 14 suspects were arrested for involvement in fights and disturbing public order.”

Police further stressed that during a period in which Israel is under the threat of rockets and missiles, the public is expected to act responsibly and follow Home Front Command instructions. Officers, they added, should be focused on life-saving missions and emergency responses rather than dealing with violent disorder that endangers the public.
