Who Will Dare Draft Them? Haredi Ignite Jerusalem

Overnight unrest in Jerusalem underscored rising tensions over plans to draft Haredi men into the IDF

The debate over drafting Haredi men into the IDF has long shaped Israel’s political and social landscape, and in Jerusalem it intensifies each time it resurfaces. Overnight, that tension erupted again as a local march quickly spiraled into widespread unrest.

Why Is the Haredi Draft Debate Surging Again in Jerusalem?

Overnight, an uncoordinated march moved from Shabbat Square toward Zacks Square. Police reported that once crowds grew, the protest escalated sharply. Demonstrators blocked Shmuel HaNavi Street, threw stones at officers and ignited trash bins, creating hazards for drivers and residents.

How Did Police Disperse the Overnight Clashes?

Police and Border Police units repeatedly called on demonstrators to disperse, but loudspeaker instructions were ignored. Officers used physical dispersal measures and designated crowd-control tools. According to the Jerusalem District Police: “The police will continue to allow lawful protest within the boundaries of the law, but will not permit violent riots or conduct that endangers the public.”
