Thousands of vehicles pass through them every day on the way to work, school, military bases, and hospitals. For most drivers, it is just another checkpoint, another traffic jam, another short delay.

Over time, routine has made these crossings almost invisible.

In early February, that routine was briefly disrupted. A man in his 50s from Qalandiya was arrested following a traffic accident at one of Jerusalem’s entrances. A search of his vehicle revealed knives and military-style clothing linked to a terror organization. Investigators later concluded that he had been planning a combined car-ramming and stabbing attack at the Hizma checkpoint.

Jerusalem District Police said: “The investigation shows that the suspect acted out of nationalist motives, planned his actions over a long period, and was on his way to carry out a combined attack. Police activity led to the prevention of the incident and his arrest”.

Is the Hizma checkpoint an easy target for attackers?

The Hizma checkpoint is one of the main access points into Jerusalem from the north. It handles heavy daily traffic, with slow-moving vehicles, buses, soldiers, and civilians sharing a narrow space during peak hours.

According to investigators, this was the intended target. In such crowded conditions, even a single vehicle can cause serious harm within seconds. A combined ramming and stabbing attack in this area could quickly turn into a mass-casualty incident.

In this case, the suspect was stopped before reaching the checkpoint, after being involved in a self-inflicted traffic accident at the entrance to Jerusalem. The plan was disrupted not by a public alert, but by an unexpected incident on the road.

What does this case say about security at Jerusalem’s entrances?

Jerusalem is more heavily secured than most cities in Israel. Cameras, patrols, and checkpoints form multiple layers of protection. At the same time, the system relies heavily on routine and selective inspections.

Most drivers are not thoroughly checked. Security services depend on the assumption that the vast majority pose no threat.

In this case, police say the suspect had been planning his actions for months. He moved through the area with equipment in his vehicle and reached Jerusalem’s entrance without raising immediate suspicion. Only the traffic accident led to the discovery of his intentions.

The later arrest of his son, after incitement materials and Hamas flags were found in his home, reinforced police assessments that this was not an isolated incident.

The case does not change Jerusalem’s security reality overnight. But it serves as a reminder of how thin the line can be between routine and crisis, especially at the city’s main entry points.

Jerusalem’s main entrances are among the busiest traffic corridors in Israel.
