The Jerusalem Municipality, through the Eden Company, has begun infrastructure and public-space works beneath the Baram Bridge, along the Park HaMesila corridor.

The goal is to transform what is currently seen mainly as a functional urban passage into a more pleasant, safer and greener place to spend time. The project is designed for local residents, workers, business owners and visitors who pass through this part of southern Jerusalem every day.

The site is located near the Blue Line of the Jerusalem Light Rail, which is also currently under construction. For the municipality, the project is part of a wider wave of urban renewal in the area, connecting transportation, public space and leisure in one changing urban strip.

How will HaUman Street in Jerusalem change?

As part of the works, a new cycling path will be built to create a continuous connection between the Baram route and the green corridor of Park HaMesila. The project will also include upgraded infrastructure and environmental development intended to improve the experience for pedestrians and cyclists.

One of the central elements in the new plan is a water feature, alongside an open amphitheater that will be used for community, cultural and leisure activities. A designated picnic area is also planned, turning the space into more than just a route people pass through on their way somewhere else.

Artistic design and painting works are expected to give the site a clearer identity and help turn it into a more inviting urban meeting point.

Will Park HaMesila get a new Jerusalem connection?

The connection to Park HaMesila is one of the key parts of the project. The park has become one of southern Jerusalem’s most recognizable urban routes in recent years, used by walkers, cyclists and families throughout the week.

The new development is expected to improve its connection to the HaUman and Baram area. An urban orchard will also be planted at the site, providing shade, improving the environmental quality of the space and softening the look of the area with more greenery.

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion said: “Jerusalem continues to invest in developing public space and upgrading employment and commercial areas across the city. The HaUman public-space project is part of the municipal effort to create pleasant, accessible and inviting spaces that combine transportation, leisure and a high-quality environment for the benefit of residents, workers and business owners in the area.”

Once completed, the HaUman public space is expected to become a more active and connected urban area, one that changes not only how this part of Jerusalem looks, but also how people move through it, pause in it and use it during the day.

The HaUman Street area in Jerusalem, better known today as a busy zone of workspaces, commerce and daily traffic, is now entering a new stage of development.
