Abu Tir was once known to the public mainly because of his beard, dyed with red henna, of which nothing now remains.

Who is Mohammed Abu Tir and what is his connection to Jerusalem?

Abu Tir, now 76, was born in the Umm Tuba neighborhood of East Jerusalem. He joined the Muslim Brotherhood and later the military activity of Hamas when the organization was founded. Abu Tir was appointed by Adel Awadallah, then head of Hamas’s military wing in Judea and Samaria, as commander of the Jerusalem area for the military wing. During the 1980s and 1990s, he was involved in acquiring weapons, financing and recruiting terror cells for the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

After the Awadallah brothers were killed in 1998, he sought to avenge their deaths and planned to poison Jerusalem’s water sources in order to cause mass murder. His plan was exposed, he was imprisoned and sentenced to life in prison. Ahead of the 2005 elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council, he was released after serving only about seven years in prison. That was also when he made his major breakthrough into public awareness. Abu Tir was placed second on Hamas’s national list, “Change and Reform,” immediately after Ismail Haniyeh, who was later killed, and was elected as a member of parliament. To this day, he still holds the title “member of the Legislative Council from Jerusalem.”

Following his refusal to resign from the Hamas parliament after his election, and after a series of legal proceedings, Israel’s interior minister revoked his permanent residency status in East Jerusalem in 2006, citing “breach of loyalty to the State of Israel.” In 2010, after a prolonged legal battle and a petition to the High Court of Justice, Abu Tir was removed from Jerusalem and settled in the village of Dar Salah, near Bethlehem. Since then, he has been barred from entering the territory of the State of Israel.

On November 24, 2025, he was arrested again. The arrest was carried out against the background of intelligence information held by security forces, indicating that despite his advanced age, Abu Tir continued to serve as a directing, influential and inciting figure among Hamas activists, and that his activity posed a danger to regional security. He was held, as noted, in administrative detention for six months, part of which, according to Palestinian sources, he served in the “Rakefet” wing of Nitzan Prison, where Nukhba terrorists are held.

In total, Abu Tir has “spent” 44 years of his life in prison.

Mohammed Abu Tir, originally from Jerusalem, one of the senior Hamas terror operatives and political figures in the Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria area, was released Thursday from Ramon Prison after serving six months in administrative detention.
