Jerusalem’s Independence Park closes behind a fence

Jerusalem’s Independence Park, one of the best-known green spaces in the city center, has been blocked in recent days by a tall white fence, with visitors no longer allowed inside. Just as summer begins and the city needs every open patch of shade, the park now looks from the outside like yet another closed construction site.

Graffiti has already appeared on the fence, including the messages “You blocked our park” and “Here lies Independence Park.” For many Jerusalem residents passing by, this is not only a protest over one park. It reflects a wider feeling of a city being blocked corner by corner – sidewalks, roads, squares, streets, and now a major public garden in the heart of Jerusalem.

Why was Jerusalem’s Independence Park closed to visitors?

The closure is intended for renovation work in the park and for preparing infrastructure for several transportation and real estate projects planned in the area. But the timing and location make the closure especially sensitive. Independence Park is not a small neighborhood garden or a marginal open space. It is a central public area used by residents, workers, families, young people and visitors in downtown Jerusalem.

The park’s official name is Harry Wilf Garden. It is located between King George Street to the west, Gershon Agron Street and France Square to the south, Hillel Street to the north, and Menashe Ben Israel Street, the old Muslim cemetery and the Museum of Tolerance to the east. Historically, most of the area was part of the Mamilla Cemetery. In March 1921, the area was designated as open space in a plan by architect Charles Robert Ashbee, and in the 1930s the first part of the garden was established, today known as Meir Sherman Garden.

Are Jerusalem’s infrastructure works now closing the parks too?

In Jerusalem of June 2026, the closure of Independence Park joins an urban reality that is already weighing heavily on residents: infrastructure work, excavations, closures, dust, noise and huge traffic jams. Even when some of the projects are needed for the city’s future, the daily result for those who live here is a feeling of constant overload.

In 1957, development work began to turn the western part of the garden into a public park, with the support of South African Jewry. The park was first inaugurated on Israel’s Independence Day in 1958, and again at the end of 1959. In other words, this is not just another urban lawn, but a site with deep historical layers that has become part of the city memory of central Jerusalem.

How does the renovation of Independence Park connect to Jerusalem’s traffic burden?

What shocks Jerusalem residents most is the sight itself: a central, familiar and open park wrapped entirely in a white fence, with no way to enter. Instead of grass, trees and paths – a long wall. Instead of breathing space – another closure. In a city where every route already feels like an obstacle course, closing a park is also perceived as another blow to everyday life.

The question is not only whether Independence Park needs renovation. The question is how to manage a city during renovations without turning it into a closed and exhausted space. Residents are not necessarily opposed to upgrading the park or developing infrastructure, but they struggle with the feeling that every project comes with another fence, another closure and another future promise that they must pay for in the present.

Independence Park is expected to return to the public, renovated and improved. But for now, behind the white fence and the messages written on it – especially “Here lies Independence Park” – it has become a sharp symbol of today’s Jerusalem: a city under endless construction, to the point where even the place meant to give it air has been shut.

Jerusalem’s Independence Park, one of the best-known green spaces in the city center, has been blocked in recent days by a tall white fence, with visitors no longer allowed inside.
