Only a few days have passed since the latest outbreak of public disorder in Jerusalem, but the confrontation over the conscription of yeshiva students and the arrest of draft dodgers is showing no sign of easing. Roadblocks, clashes with police and attempts to disrupt traffic have evolved from isolated protest tactics into an established method: whenever a young ultra-Orthodox man who has not regularized his military status is arrested, community mobilization networks are activated and crowds are quickly called into the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recent protests in Jerusalem and elsewhere in Israel have again followed the arrest of yeshiva students classified by the military authorities as draft dodgers. Police used crowd-control measures during disturbances, while protesters attempted to prevent arrests and send a clear message that every detention would be answered with further escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the center of the dispute is the status of ultra-Orthodox young men who are legally required to enlist. The broad exemption arrangements that existed in the past no longer provide a legal basis for avoiding military service on a sweeping scale, and the courts have demanded more effective enforcement against those who receive enlistment orders but fail to report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the ultra-Orthodox factions leading the protests, the arrest of a draft dodger is not viewed as an individual case. It is presented as a threat to the entire yeshiva world. As a result, every arrest can rapidly become a test of strength between the community and the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The movement\u2019s main strength lies in its ability to unite and organize at remarkable speed. Community alert systems distribute information about arrests in real time, pass on instructions and direct protesters toward police stations, junctions and major roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That organizational capacity is powerful, but the consequences for Jerusalem residents are severe. A public that is not directly involved in the dispute is repeatedly forced to bear the cost of the confrontation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chords Bridge, the Bar-Ilan corridor and the Har Hotzvim area remain the city\u2019s most vulnerable pressure points. Even a brief roadblock at one of these locations can disrupt the entrance to Jerusalem, delay buses and trigger a chain of traffic jams that spreads to distant neighborhoods and roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A journey that normally takes 15 minutes can stretch to two and a half hours. Bus routes fail to reach their final stops, drivers are left without an escape route, and at times traffic simply stops moving.
