Abu Aisha became widely known among the Palestinian public for a statement he made during one of his previous arrests: “Jerusalem is Arab, my brothers.”

Why Has Samer Abu Aisha Been Repeatedly Arrested in Israel?

Abu Aisha, 39, a lawyer and journalist, was first arrested in 2015. At the time, he traveled without authorization to Lebanon, an enemy state of Israel, to participate in an Arab youth camp. Since then, he has repeatedly entered and left prison over security-related offenses. The main allegations against him include incitement to violence through social media posts, including support for activity against Israel; ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine; solidarity with security prisoners; violations of restraining orders and house arrest conditions; and participation in and organization of protests and demonstrations that disrupted public order.

In December 2015, Abu Aisha and another activist, Hijazi Abu Sbeih, were issued orders barring them from Jerusalem for five months on grounds of “state security and public order.” The two refused to leave the city, barricaded themselves inside the offices of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Jerusalem, erected a protest tent in the courtyard and held demonstrations against their removal from Jerusalem and in support of the city’s Palestinian identity. On January 6, 2016, police officers forcibly removed them from the Red Cross compound.

In October 2016, the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court sentenced Abu Aisha to 20 months in prison after convicting him of violating restraining orders, incitement and maintaining ties with banned organizations. During his imprisonment, he went on hunger strike in solidarity with another prisoner, who was placed under administrative detention after completing his sentence.

In 2021, Abu Aisha participated in Palestinian protests and riots in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, also known as Shimon HaTzadik, against Jewish settlement in the area. He was arrested again and, during the arrest, declared: “Jerusalem is Arab, my brothers.” The statement was captured on camera, and the video circulated widely on social media, bringing him considerable public attention.

In 2024, Abu Aisha was arrested again.
