The method uses short, controlled electrical pulses to significantly improve the penetration of medication into the abnormal cells and eliminate the need for long series of repeated invasive procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vascular malformations are a diverse group of disorders affecting the blood vessel system. They may cause pain, swelling, bleeding and impaired physical function. Some cases are especially complex and do not respond adequately to conventional treatment, leaving young patients to undergo repeated procedures over many years in an effort to control their symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How were complex vascular malformations treated until now?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standard treatment in Israel and around the world has generally involved injecting medication directly into the malformation in a procedure known as sclerotherapy. The purpose of the injection is to shrink the abnormal blood vessels and reduce pain and other symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases, however, the treatment has only a limited or temporary effect. Patients may therefore be required to undergo repeated catheterizations and injections, sometimes without achieving sufficient improvement. The technology introduced at Shaare Zedek is intended to provide an answer even for severe cases that failed to respond to previous treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does reversible electroporation work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the procedure, the medical team delivers the drug bleomycin into the malformation through a tiny catheter. A special probe then sends a short and carefully controlled electrical pulse to the treated area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pulse temporarily and reversibly opens tiny pores in the cell membranes, allowing the medication to enter the cells at a concentration that Shaare Zedek says is up to 10,000 times higher than with conventional treatment. The process enables the team to target the malformation more effectively while dramatically reducing the number of procedures required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What results are doctors seeing at Shaare Zedek?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Adam Farkas, director of the angiography unit at Shaare Zedek and the physician leading the new treatment, noted: &#8220;We are seeing fantastic results in practice, especially among young patients who had already undergone multiple invasive treatments at other hospitals without success. This innovative treatment is finally providing a real and rapid solution to their condition.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Dr. Farkas, the results have led the hospital to refer most patients arriving with vascular malformations directly to the reversible electroporation pathway.
