Dug-up streets, infrastructure work almost everywhere, light rail projects, constantly changing traffic lanes and congestion that forces drivers to spend far too much time behind the wheel. Against this backdrop comes another update that motorists will feel directly in their wallets: parking rates at municipal car parks are going up.

The Jerusalem Municipality, through the Eden municipal company, has updated parking prices at city-operated car parks. In the city center, the rate for the general public will rise from NIS 18 to NIS 22 per hour, while in other parts of the city it will increase from NIS 12 to NIS 15. The exception is the Talpiot area, where the rate will remain NIS 12 per hour, precisely because of the extensive infrastructure and development work underway there.

How much will parking in central Jerusalem cost now?

For anyone who does not qualify for the “Yerushalmi” resident benefit, entering central Jerusalem by car is becoming more expensive. One hour in a municipal car park in the city center will cost NIS 22, an increase of four shekels compared with the previous rate. In other areas of the city, the price will be NIS 15 per hour instead of NIS 12.

The municipality says the move is intended to “regulate and manage demand in the city’s central areas,” encourage the use of public transportation, particularly the light rail, and address rising operating costs.

In other words, Jerusalem is already making it harder for drivers to get around, and now it will also charge them more once they finally manage to find somewhere to leave the car.

Who will not pay more for parking in Jerusalem?

Jerusalem residents who hold the “Yerushalmi” benefit get the one piece of good news in the new pricing plan: for them, parking will remain NIS 11 per hour in all municipal car parks, with no change. Billing will continue to be calculated according to the actual number of minutes parked.

The municipality stresses that keeping the lower rate for residents is part of the mayor and city leadership’s policy of “putting the resident at the center.” In practice, the gap is now even clearer: an eligible Jerusalem resident will pay NIS 11, while a visitor parking in the city center will pay exactly twice as much per hour.

Why is the parking rate in Talpiot staying unchanged?

In the Talpiot area, the rate will remain NIS 12 per hour. The municipality says this is intended to provide “supplementary parking” for residents, visitors and local businesses because of the extensive infrastructure and development works taking place in the area.

The new rates take effect on Tuesday, August 11. And perhaps that sums up the Jerusalem story in one sentence: the city is undergoing a massive infrastructure transformation, but until the promised future emerges from behind the dust and construction barriers, drivers are still dealing with Jerusalem as it is today – crowded, dug up, jammed, and for visitors, more expensive to park in as well.

Driving in Jerusalem has become an exhausting task for quite some time.
