More than half a century has passed since 15 Israeli soldiers were killed in an ambush on the banks of the Suez Canal, but in Jerusalem their names remain part of the landscape of a residential neighborhood. This week, the Fifteen Memorial Garden at 9 Ramat Hagolan Street in Ramat Eshkol was reopened after undergoing extensive renovation and development work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The garden commemorates 15 soldiers from the Paratroopers, Armored Corps and Artillery Corps who were killed in 1970, during the War of Attrition, when Egyptian forces ambushed an IDF armored patrol near the Suez Canal. Their names are engraved on the memorial stone in the garden, beneath a biblical verse from Psalms: \u201cI have bestowed strength on a warrior; I have exalted one chosen from the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The memorial itself originated with the bereaved families, who initiated its establishment, while the Jerusalem Municipality allocated the land for the garden. Over the years, the site became part of the neighborhood landscape, bringing the memory of a military event that took place far from Jerusalem into the everyday lives of local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The garden\u2019s name preserves the memory of the 15 Israeli soldiers killed in the Egyptian ambush during the War of Attrition. The stone bearing their names remains the focal point of the site, keeping alive in Jerusalem an event that occurred more than 56 years ago along the Suez Canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lower section of the garden also includes a lookout dedicated to Avi Limoi, who was killed in Lebanon in May 1998 at the age of 21 after a roadside explosive device was detonated against a military force heading out for an ambush. Additional preservation and renovation work is currently being carried out at the lookout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project included renewed infrastructure, replacement of lighting poles, construction of walls and stairs, paving and resurfacing of paths, and extensive landscaping work. A walking path, ground games, pergolas and new seating areas were also added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion referred to the connection between remembrance and everyday public space during the inauguration and noted: \u201cThe reopening of the renewed Fifteen Memorial Garden in Ramat Eshkol is a moving moment connecting the city\u2019s past with its future.
