In recent days, Jerusalem District police officers, Jerusalem Border Police fighters and undercover officers, together with the canine unit, raided a house in the neighborhood after intelligence raised suspicions that illegal weapons and ammunition were being kept there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The search once again illustrated why police regard illegal weapons in East Jerusalem as a threat that does not necessarily remain within the neighborhood where they are hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the search, officers discovered an M-16 rifle and a Sig Sauer handgun. Police also found magazines loaded with dozens of rounds, including magazines intended for the M-16 and the handgun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The search also uncovered an ammunition box containing hundreds of 5.56 mm rounds, along with various weapon parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In other words, the raid did not reveal just a single firearm hidden inside a home. Police found a broader collection of weapons, ammunition and related equipment, leading to the arrest of two local residents in their 20s and 30s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two suspects were taken for questioning at the Oz police station. Police said further decisions regarding their detention would be made in accordance with the findings of the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is what turns this from a neighborhood incident into a broader Jerusalem story. An illegal firearm is not necessarily a problem that stays in one neighborhood. Once it leaves the house where it was hidden, it can potentially be used in criminal violence, a violent dispute or a terrorist attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The geographical distance between Jabal Mukaber and central Jerusalem therefore offers no guarantee that the danger will remain confined to one area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jerusalem District police say their campaign against illegal weapons continues at high intensity during the Tishrei holiday period, combining intelligence gathering, covert activity and targeted raids designed to locate weapons before they are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to police, more than 117 illegally held firearms have been seized across the Jerusalem District since the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
