An extraordinary and historic achievement was recorded this week in international martial arts when young kickboxer Mohammad Murad Alyan captured the gold medal for the Palestinian national team at the official World Cup tournament organized by the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Alyan, approximately 17 years old and a resident of the Issawiya neighborhood in East Jerusalem, displayed absolute dominance in the junior division. He became one of the tournament’s standout competitors after defeating every opponent on his way to the title with devastating knockouts.

The East Jerusalem kickboxer’s path to the gold medal was a relentless display of superiority. In the preliminary round and subsequent medal rounds, including the semifinals, Alyan stunned spectators and opponents alike by finishing his fights with swift first-round knockouts, combining precise technique with explosive power.

In the championship final, Alyan faced a formidable local fighter representing host nation Uzbekistan. Despite his opponent’s home advantage and the support of the local crowd, Alyan left no room for doubt. He delivered another knockout, completing a run of three consecutive victories in the tournament’s final stages, and secured his place at the top of the international podium to the cheers of his fellow Palestinian delegation members.

Alyan’s story reflects the unique complexities facing athletes from East Jerusalem. As a permanent resident holding an Israeli blue identity card, he benefits from freedom of movement that enables him to travel and compete internationally. Yet on the international sporting stage, he chooses to represent Palestine, a sporting entity fully recognized by international sports organizations and the International Olympic Committee.

Alyan traveled to Uzbekistan as part of the official delegation of the Palestinian Kickboxing Federation, which earned considerable praise at a tournament featuring approximately 3,000 athletes from 77 countries. In addition to Alyan’s gold medal, the Palestinian delegation collected several bronze medals.

Behind the young champion’s remarkable success stands the Numur Al-Quds (Lions of Jerusalem) club, based in East Jerusalem, where he trains under the close supervision of coach Khaled Alyan. In recent years, the club has developed into a training ground for fighters competing at the international level. This latest victory serves as formal recognition of the demanding training and tactical discipline instilled in Alyan.

Upon returning to Jerusalem, the young champion was welcomed with celebrations and considerable local pride, demonstrating that talent emerging from East Jerusalem’s neighborhoods can reach the highest levels of international competition.
