There are creative infiltration attempts, there are dangerous ones, and then there is the insane trick recently exposed at the Al-Jib checkpoint near Jerusalem: an illegal resident was crammed into the hollow interior of a large speaker inside a car trunk, while a baby sat in a safety seat directly in front of him, allegedly helping conceal what was hidden behind it.
Jerusalem Border Police officers and crossing-unit forces stopped the vehicle for inspection during an operational activity. At first glance, the trunk appeared to be packed with an ordinary mixture of a baby stroller, bags, clothing and family equipment. But the large speaker placed among the items aroused the officers’ suspicion. A thorough search revealed that an entire person was hiding behind its panel.
How did an illegal resident hide inside a speaker at the Al-Jib checkpoint?
According to police, officers noticed during the inspection that the speaker had been positioned inside the trunk in a suspicious manner. When they examined it closely, they discovered that one of its panels had been turned into an improvised hiding compartment. Inside the cramped space, they found a suspect who was identified as an illegal resident.
Footage from the scene shows just how extreme the attempt was. The speaker was pressed against the baby stroller and surrounded by equipment and personal belongings, making the trunk look like nothing more than the usual family clutter. This time, however, that clutter concealed a human being.
Why was placing a baby in front of the hiding place especially serious?
The incident goes beyond the suspicion of illegal entry into Israel. Positioning the hiding compartment directly behind a baby seated in a child safety seat raises serious questions about the danger to which the child was exposed. In the event of sudden braking, a collision or an attempted escape, the overcrowded trunk and the person crammed inside it could have created a dangerous trap.
The illegal resident and the driver, who is suspected of transporting him, were transferred for further questioning by the investigations and intelligence unit of the Jerusalem Border Police.
How many illegal residents were arrested during the past week?
The unusual incident was only one part of a much broader enforcement operation. The Israel Police Spokesperson stated: “This activity joins the operational efforts of Border Police officers in all sectors during the past week, during which approximately 460 illegal residents were arrested, along with more than 60 additional suspects on suspicion of transporting, housing and employing illegal residents.”
The figures point to the scale of the phenomenon, but even among hundreds of arrests, the sight of a person folded inside a speaker behind a baby is the kind of case that is difficult to ignore.
