A busy junction, a red light, vehicles moving from every direction, and within moments a routine police patrol in Jerusalem turned into a dangerous chase after a stolen car. According to police, the vehicle had been stolen a short time earlier from Bat Yam and was making its way toward the West Bank before it was stopped by Jerusalem District Police officers.
During a routine patrol, a police officer from the Shalem station in the Jerusalem District noticed a vehicle that raised his suspicion. A quick check showed that the car had been stolen shortly before. The officer began following it, while additional forces were called in to assist.
How was the stolen car identified near Jerusalem?
According to police, the officer’s initial suspicion led to a rapid check, which found that the vehicle had been reported stolen. At that point, the incident shifted from a routine patrol into an operational chase, aimed at preventing the car from being transferred beyond the line, where locating and recovering it would become far more difficult.
The suspect, according to police, noticed the officers and began fleeing while driving wildly. During the chase, he allegedly committed serious traffic offenses, endangered other road users and hit another vehicle in his path. Despite the danger on the road, the incident ended without fatalities.
What happened at the end of the Jerusalem police chase?
After a short chase, the officers managed to arrest the suspect. A check of his identity found that he is a 25-year-old resident of the northern West Bank, who was staying in Israel illegally. He was taken for questioning at the Shalem station in the Jerusalem District, and later brought before the Magistrate’s Court, which extended his detention until May 14, 2026.
Jerusalem District Police stated: “Jerusalem District Police officers will continue to act firmly against property crimes, vehicle theft and the endangerment of road users, while working to arrest suspects and bring them to justice.”
Beyond the specific case, the incident shows how quickly a stolen vehicle can turn into a life-threatening event in the middle of the road. What begins as suspicion over a stolen car can become a chase, a crash and a real danger to drivers and pedestrians.
