Memorial Day eve usually brings a different kind of quiet. Flags hang from balconies, streets fill with blue and white, and remembrance settles into everyday life. Against that backdrop, an unusual incident unfolded in Beit Shemesh, near Jerusalem, disrupting the atmosphere.

Why were two suspects arrested in Beit Shemesh on Memorial Day eve?

According to police, officers from the Beit Shemesh station in the Jerusalem District spotted the two suspects in real time as they were pulling down Israeli flags in a public area. The suspects are also believed to have desecrated the flags during the act. The incident took place on the eve of Memorial Day and was classified as a public order offense and damage to national symbols. The two were arrested at the scene and taken in for questioning.

Police stressed the severity of the act and its timing. Jerusalem District Police stated: “This is a disgraceful and despicable act. The suspects did not only commit the serious offense of desecrating the national flag, but did so deliberately on Memorial Day eve, when citizens across the country are honoring the memory of fallen soldiers who gave their lives defending the state.”

At the end of the investigation, a decision will be made on whether to request an extension of the suspects’ detention in court.
