Thousands of fireworks believed to have been destined for East Jerusalem and the Old City were seized during an overnight police raid in central Hebron. Three young residents of the city were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the attempted smuggling operation and taken for questioning by the David Precinct of the Jerusalem District Police.
The operation followed intelligence indicating that a large shipment of fireworks was being prepared for transfer into Jerusalem. David Precinct officers placed the suspects under surveillance and continued gathering information until police commanders decided to move into the operational phase inside Hebron.
How was the fireworks smuggling operation into Jerusalem uncovered?
According to police, the operation was commanded by David Precinct Commander Chief Superintendent Dvir Tamim. It involved precinct detectives, Border Police officers operating in the West Bank, members of the Judea Arrow Unit of the Judea and Samaria District, Jerusalem riot police and a canine unit.
During the searches, officers located thousands of fireworks packed inside cardboard boxes. Images released by police show numerous boxes loaded into a vehicle, alongside packages containing large quantities of fireworks that were allegedly intended to be transported into Jerusalem.
Why are fireworks considered dangerous in East Jerusalem?
Although fireworks are commonly associated with celebrations, they can become dangerous weapons when fired directly at people, vehicles or security forces. In Jerusalem, fireworks have repeatedly been used during riots and violent confrontations, making the movement of such a large quantity into densely populated neighborhoods a significant public safety concern.
Police did not disclose how the shipment was expected to enter the city, who was meant to receive it or whether the fireworks were connected to a particular event. At this stage, these details remain part of the ongoing investigation.
What will happen to the three suspects arrested in Hebron?
The three suspects, all in their twenties, were transferred for questioning at the David Precinct. Police are expected to request an extension of their detention in court, allowing investigators to examine the suspected smuggling route, identify any additional people involved and determine the shipment’s intended destination.
Jerusalem District Police stated: “Israel Police will continue to act decisively, combining intelligence, investigative and enforcement capabilities, in order to thwart the smuggling of dangerous items that could endanger the public and security forces, and to bring those involved to justice.”
