It is hard to imagine a more brutal urban trap. Beneath a street in Jerusalem’s Gilo neighborhood, a man was found inside an underground garbage container, trapped in an enclosed space where the air itself had become dangerous. Firefighters who arrived at the scene used gas detectors and discovered an oxygen shortage along with extremely high concentrations of explosive gases inside the bin.
That meant rescuers could not simply climb down and pull him out. As long as the gas levels remained high, both the trapped man and the rescue teams were at risk. He remained inside while firefighters first tried to make the space safe enough to breathe and work in.
According to police officials at the scene, the man has a mental health background. Firefighters had to persuade him to wear a rescue hood that supplied breathable air. At the same time, crews pumped fresh air into the container using specialized equipment and waited for the gas concentrations to drop significantly before moving to the next stage.
How do firefighters rescue someone from an underground garbage bin filled with dangerous gases?
Even after conditions inside improved, another major obstacle remained. The container itself, together with its contents, was estimated to weigh about one ton. A crane provided by the Jerusalem Municipality was called to the scene to lift the bin and allow rescuers to reach the trapped man.
Rami Meir, the incident commander, said: “This was a complex and dangerous rescue operation. When we arrived, we detected extremely high concentrations of explosive gases inside the bin, so our first priority was to reduce the gas levels and pump air into the container. After more than an hour of intensive work, we managed to create the conditions that made the rescue possible and transferred him for medical treatment.”
Only after more than an hour of stabilizing the situation, ventilating the container and lifting it with the crane were firefighters able to extract the man alive. Magen David Adom teams treated him at the scene and evacuated him in moderate condition to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.
How did the Gilo rescue turn into an attempted murder investigation in Jerusalem?
After the victim was taken to hospital, the case took a dramatic turn. Officers from the Moriah Police Station in the Jerusalem District began investigating how the man had ended up inside the garbage bin in the first place.
Jerusalem District Police said: “Following the incident, officers from the Moriah Police Station opened an investigation into the circumstances in which the victim fell into the bin. During the investigation, evidence and documentation were collected that raised suspicion that the victim’s 28-year-old brother was involved in the incident. He was arrested and questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.”
The suspect is expected to be brought before the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court for a remand hearing. What initially appeared to be an extraordinary rescue from a garbage container had, within hours, become an attempted murder investigation, with one disturbing detail remaining at the center of the story: more than an hour during which a man was trapped beneath a Jerusalem street in a confined space where the air was barely safe to breathe.
