For weeks, a quiet investigation unfolded around Jerusalem, gradually exposing an organized network operating behind routine traffic flows. The turning point came on Route 1, one of Israel’s main highways, where a coordinated police operation disrupted what appeared to be a well-structured smuggling system.

The investigation, led by Border Police units operating around Jerusalem together with a tactical brigade, focused on suspects involved in transporting undocumented migrants into Israel. According to investigators, the network relied on coordination between drivers and intermediaries who moved people from areas near Jerusalem deeper into the country.

How did the smuggling network operate around Jerusalem?

Authorities say the operation was methodical rather than improvised. Vehicles were used repeatedly, pickup points were carefully selected, and routes were chosen to reduce the chances of detection. Each participant had a defined role, allowing the network to function efficiently over time.

The enforcement phase began when undercover units, detectives, drone teams and Border Police fighters acted simultaneously. On Route 1, officers stopped a minibus traveling from Jerusalem toward central Israel, carrying 22 undocumented migrants along with an Israeli driver in his 40s from Kafr Aqab, suspected of transporting them.

What happened during the police raid in Jerusalem?

At the same time, forces carried out arrests at two additional locations inside Jerusalem. Two suspects, residents of Ras al-Amud in their 50s and 20s, were detained on suspicion of managing the network.

Jerusalem District Police said: “The Israel Police and Border Police will continue to act decisively against the smuggling, transportation and employment of undocumented migrants, which harms public safety.”

All suspects were taken for further questioning. The case highlights how routes leading out of Jerusalem can serve not only everyday movement, but also organized criminal activity operating beneath the surface.
